How It All Started
Web Design and how I started;
In 1990, I started a bonsai business in the quaint town of Sugar Loaf, New York called The Bonsai Center. I imported bonsai from China and Japan to grow them out and style. it was a great little niche business and I made a nice living doing it.
In 1994, I decided to make my own web page complete with a primitive shopping cart. I toiled over this for months and read everything I possibly could. My obsessive personality certainly helped me as I spent MANY sleepless nights learning the ins and outs of web design.
In the summer of '94 I created the bonsaicenter.com, shortly after we got a number one listing for the search term bonsai in the most used search engine of that time Yahoo. The phone started to ring A LOT. In 1995 we were shipping all over the USA twice a week. Christmas of that year we sold out our entire inventory.
Stores in the area started to notice and I started building pages for them in my spare time. It got so good that we actually closed our retail store most of the time and concentrated on our internet business.
In 2001 I closed The Bonsai Center, importing bonsai became problematic as the killing of trees in New York was traced to the Asian long horned beetle bought into this country via bonsai. I didn't miss a beat as I already had a pretty extensive list of clients doing web design and search engine optimization.
The internet business was thriving despite the fact that instead of 4 bonsai stores on the net there where now hundreds.
